Case report
A 39-year-old man presented with continuous epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting of 7 months' duration. The condition of the patient worsened over the 1 month before presentation, with the development of high fever (39.8°C) and abdominal pain radiating to the left shoulder. There was no significant weight loss. Laboratory test results included the following: white blood cell count, 15.1 × 109/L (normal: 4.5-11.5 × 109/L); C-reactive protein, 9 mg/L (<5 mg/L); and fibrinogen, 4.97 g/L (1.8-3.5
Discussion
Percutaneous drainage currently is the treatment of first choice for hepatic abscess because of its high success and low mortality rates compared with surgical procedures.1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Although the morbidity of percutaneous drainage is relatively low (0%-5.8%), the procedure, nevertheless, can result in serious complications. Chung et al.12 described two cases of hepatic abscesses that ruptured into the portal and hepatic veins after percutaneous transhepatic drainage, with consequent severe
